HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL ELLISISLAND.ORG REACHES OVER 6 BILLION HITS -- IMPROVES EFFICIENCY WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. has announced that its history making Web site – www.ellisisland.org – has now generated over 6 BILLION hits since its launch in April 2001. To support the ongoing interest and traffic, the Foundation has added advanced Oracle technology to efficiently store and manage the millions of immigrant arrival records and images that are part of the American Family Immigration History Center™. The Center and Web site now offer even easier and quicker access to the immigration information on the 25 million people who entered America through the Port of New York and Ellis Island between 1892-1924. Forty percent of Americans can trace their roots back to at least one ancestor whose records are included in this database. Hailed as one of the biggest launches in Internet history, the site quickly assumed the #1 spot on Lycos and stayed in the Lycos Top 50 for six weeks. It was rated as a “Top Newcomer” by Jupiter Media Metrix and noted as a significant event in “Google’s 2001 Zeitgeist Annual Review,” along with garnering thousands of print and broadcast stories, making it one of the most popular genealogical destinations on the Internet. "With genealogy sites among the fastest growing area on the Internet, we are gratified by the continued interest in www.ellisisland.org," said Steve Briganti, President and CEO of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. "Our recent technology upgrade now allows the site to better support large volumes of traffic as well as quick and easy access to the valuable immigration records which are the key that can unlock the door to family history research for the 100 million Americans who trace their roots back to the Port of New York and Ellis Island." With the high availability and reliability afforded by the advanced technology, the Foundation has been able to focus on streamlining and simplifying the site design. This has resulted in an interface that is much more user-friendly, allowing for both easier and faster navigation. The site also allows millions of visitors who successfully locate their family immigration records to purchase actual copies of their ancestor’s original ship’s passenger manifest, as well as a picture of the ship which carried their ancestor to America. Both are reproduced on archival quality paper. There are over 3 ½ million manifest pages available on the site, as well as images of over 800 passenger ships. Visitors are also invited to create an illustrated history of their family by combining images from the archives with their own photos, stories and mementos. Generations of family members can work together using the Center’s scanners, cameras and recording equipment or in their own home via the Internet, to make a narrated Family History Scrapbook.
