A Message From The Foundation

April 8th, 2010

You may have seen recent media coverage concerning an organization named Save Ellis Island that was having serious financial problems and might need to shut down. Save Ellis Island's role was to raise funds and restore the buildings on the southside of Ellis Island.

It appears this coverage may have created some confusion with people who thought it was referring to The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. We want to clear up that misconception and assure you that The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, while facing the same challenges that most non-profits have faced during this economic downturn, is alive and well and work on the new Peopling of America® Center at Ellis Island is in progress.

We are proud of the work we have done with the National Park Service over the last 28 years. This has included restoring the Statue of Liberty for her Centennial in 1986, overseeing the largest historic restoration in U.S. history at Ellis Island and creating the world-class Ellis Island Immigration Museum which has welcomed over 35 million visitors since it opened in 1990, creating The American Immigrant Wall of Honor® and the American Family Immigration History Center® and helping the NPS reopen Lady Liberty after 9/11.

We thank you for your continued support and wish to assure you that this coverage is not about us. Your generous gifts to The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation are being carefully used to support the creation of the Peopling of America® Center, currently scheduled to open in early 2012.
